The Louvre-Lens' New Gallery of Time: A Reimagined Immersive Experience
In December 2024, Louvre-Lens hit a major milestone by unveiling a completely revamped Galerie du Temps. This gallery, the heart of the museum, symbolizes its dedication to making art and creative masterpieces accessible to everyone. The ambitious makeover enhances the visitor experience, offering an even more immersive and captivating journey through time.
Spread over 3,000 m² of open space, the redesigned gallery invites visitors to explore fluidly, like a 'river' where each artwork represents a stage in history. Over 250 art treasures, ranging from the 4th millennium BC to the 19th century, are showcased alongside prestigious loans from major national museums, including the Musée d'Archéologie nationale and the Musée du Quai Branly - Jacques Chirac, providing a broader perspective on world civilizations.
The new design, crafted by Atelier AtoY and inspired by the SANAA agency's vision, uses light materials like aluminum and concrete, enhanced by zenithal lighting. This airy atmosphere makes the artworks appear to float, inviting visitors into a contemplative dialogue where they can create their own paths between reflection and wonder.
The gallery now includes contemporary works, creating connections between past and present, such as Arcimboldo's The Seasons and Monkman's Paris, or the statues of Julius Caesar and Zanele Muholi. By expanding their temporal and artistic scope, these new pieces highlight the universality of human issues across centuries.
No matter how you navigate the 'river of time,' each visit becomes an invitation to discover how art links eras and builds bridges between civilizations and today's perspectives. Staying true to its commitment to accessibility, Louvre-Lens continues to offer free access to this cultural adventure.
